Testing is Not Teaching

"Noticing is at the heart of building understanding that lasts.  If children feel they are known as more than just a grade in a book, they listen differently."(p.76)

To me this quote means that children will listen more intently and wish to understand and learn if they feel a teacher cares about them and cares to know who they really are.

"When we attend to children's stories, we establish probably the best foundation for their own future as learners."

When adults listen to students stories there are many benefits.   Students feel valued and important and are motivated to think, to express their ideas carefully, and to consider others points of view or need for clarification.  Listening and speaking lay the foundation for reading and for writing.
