Day 1~Wednesday June 24, 2015

Breakfast: Anyone interested in the breakfast pie recipe?

*Stephen opened the day with a quote by John W. Gardner:

"Much education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers when we should be teaching them to grow their own plants."

*Introduction done again quickly to reintroduce ourselves to our cohorts.
*Remember to check USM email account, this will be where grades are sent.

*Reviewed summer portfolio requirements. (Check yellow paper or blog for further information).
*Due Thursday July 2nd

*Include reflection for all readings so far (summer)
~Because Writing Matters
~Testing is Not Teaching
~One from the Writer's Life List (6/30)
~One from the Teaching Writing List (7/1)

*Video on changing educations paradigms.
~Why Educate?
~What does public education want to create?

*Walk around silent discussion. After, we formed small groups and discussed ways to solve the problem, instead of just admiring the problem. Brought these back for a whole group share.

*Writers toolbox was created in google docs as a way to generate story starters.
~Stephen and I thought this could be used successfully with K-12.

*Free Writing Time: many opportunities throughout the day.
~This made us remember to always allow students the opportunity to explore and play with a concept after it has been taught.

*Google Docs novice instruction (for those that needed it).
~Whole group Doc Share practice.

*Lessons from our mentor
~Less is more for the presentation.
~Stick to a 10 minute presentation.
~Practice in front of a mirror.
~No rubric for the endless possibilities which are our Learning Autobiography
~Written Autobiography can be any length (1 page = about 1 minute).

*Inner Critic
~We drew pictures of what we thought our inner critic looked like, and added words/phrases of some of the things they say to us that may or may not be positive.

*Marathon Prep
~Groups were assigned and plans were made for this corner stone part of the writing project.
~Wear your comfy shoes tomorrow for our walk and write tour of South Portland.
~Groups will need to spend 10-20minutes writing and then share. We are only aloud to thank the people who do share, no other comments. Sounds like an adventure!

*Closing by Erin:

"It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you
might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default." J.K. Rowling

**Great first day everyone. It sounds like we have a lot to look forward to in the next six days. Happy writing!!!
