ReplyDeleteAs I sit quietly tonight, a bit exhausted from the day, I feel the great joy of once again being a learner. I am grateful for the open hearted sharing of all the members of the group, the effective instructorship, and the inspiration of the presenters. A bit terrified of what is to come, I remember this poem of Seamus Heaney "Digging." Hope you

Digging
BY SEAMUS HEANEY 1939–2013
Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; snug as a gun.
Under my window, a clean rasping sound
When the spade sinks into gravelly ground:
My father, digging. I look down
Till his straining rump among the flowerbeds
Bends low, comes up twenty years away
Stooping in rhythm through potato drills
Where he was digging.
The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft
Against the inside knee was levered firmly.
He rooted out tall tops, buried the bright edge deep
To scatter new potatoes that we picked,
Loving their cool hardness in our hands.
Lovely, thanks. Perfectly timed for the planting of onions and .....peas! Have a great ending to your school years.
ReplyDeleteLorry, thanks for Seamus Heaney - not the typical Irish patriot. Lest we Americans forget that Ireland - not Virginia - was the first English colony!
